Professional Development Seminars

In collaboration with various experts in their fields, the University of Maryland has contracted with some of the best presenters in the area to lead one-hour seminars on the following topics. Each topic will be presented twice throughout the day – see schedule below for times. Also, please note that there will be a 15 minute break between each session.

Personal Branding: Whether you are starting your first job or have been in the workforce for many years, building and maintaining a personal brand is important to success. This seminar will provide tips and tricks to help you build your personal brand and maintain it throughout your career.

Networking: The word networking is exciting for some, frightening for others, but is necessary in today’s career development landscape.  Fortunately, it is something we all do on a daily basis but may not realize it. This seminar geared towards people that “fear” the word networking, demystifying the process and providing real, tangible, and easy ways to network with confidence.
Instructors:  Linda Lenoir www.careers.umd.edu

Consulting: One of the most frequently asked questions from job seekers: “Is a consulting career right for me?” This seminar will explore this potential career path and identifying the benefits of being your own boss as well as the pitfalls many consultants encounter during their careers.
Instructor: Avraham Cohn (‘11) www.digitaldevelopmentconsulting.com

Career Coaching: Another frequently asked question “Should I hire a career coach?” This seminar will provide some insight on what a career coach really does and help you answer this question for yourself.
Instructor: Alison Horner  (‘06) www.alisonelissa.com
Capacity 40 people per session.

Social Media: Whether you are social media savvy or just exploring the opportunities social media can have in your career development, this seminar will explain what Linked In, Facebook, and Pinterest are and how to best utilize these tools for your job search activities and overall career development.
Instructor: Kara Kehoe, kara@kareerscoach.com.
Capacity 85 people per session.

Managing Finances: Managing finances during job uncertainty/change is one of the biggest stressors when an individual is unemployed, underemployed, or a recent career changer. This seminar is geared towards people who may have had a change in their income (either positively or negatively) and would like guidance on potential next steps to ensure their money is being spent effectively and efficiently.
