Order of the Engineer Ceremony

Event Description - Order of the Engineer Ceremony

March 30, 2012 • 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

The Order is the roster of engineers in the United States who have participated in an Engineers’ Ring Ceremony and who have publicly accepted the "Obligation of an Engineer".

As engineers, one of our utmost priorities is to apply high ethical standards in all of our decisions. Doctors affirm the Hippocratic Oath. So too, engineers can affirm the Oath of Obligation proclaiming a commitment to uphold their ethical responsibilities. Upon induction into the Order of the Engineer, you are given a steel band to wear on the small finger of your working hand to proudly display your commitment and remind yourself never to cut corners. The Clark School is Link #137 and hosts a ceremony every year.

Those eligible for induction include:

  • Graduates in engineering from engineering curricula accredited by ABET
  • Seniors in ABET-accredited engineering curricula within two academic terms of graduation
  • Engineering students graduating in any term in 2012
  • Licensed professional engineers
  • Special individuals, who by reason of education, eminence, or experience are deemed worthy of the Order
The ceremony is being sponsored by Lockheed Martin Corporation, and the speaker is Mr. James M. Byrne, Associate General Counsel and Chief Privacy Officer for Lockheed Martin. If you are interested in taking the Oath of Obligation, RSVP now. Times and locations will be posted at www.ooe.umd.edu. Your ring will be fitted when payment is received. All applications must be in by Friday, March 16. If you turn in your application by Friday, March 2, you may take advantage of our early bird discount and take $10 off the application fee.
