Battle of the Bands
The Alumni Battle of the Bands contest is designed to showcase the talents of current students and alumni and increase interaction by students and alumni using the association website and other Web based networking tools.
Any band having at least one member who is a current student or alumnus of the University of Maryland College Park is eligible to participate in the contest. All bands making submissions affirm availability and commit to play, should they be selected winner, at the University of Maryland Alumni Association Homecoming Bash three hours prior to game kick-off on October 20, 2012.
There is no application fee for participation, but one member of the band must be a current student or member of the University of Maryland Alumni Association. Click here for membership pricing and dues.
To apply, interested bands must send an electronic attachment or mail a CD containing one (1) song performed by the band. Liability or litigation arising from use of copyrighted materials is the sole responsibility of the submitting band. Submissions must be made no later than noon (12:00 p.m. EDT), Sept. 17, 2012, to Virginia Pinto, Assistant Director of Special Events, Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center, College Park, MD 20742, email@example.com. Submissions should include documentation of the band's name, a picture or logo of the band's name, the name of each band member, the UID of the current student or the membership number of the University of Maryland Alumni Association member, and band contact information (to include: address, telephone, and email).
A panel of judges, including alumni association staff will review all applications submitted by the application deadline. The Homecoming Bash is a family-friendly event; therefore the panel will have full discretion to accept any band that it feels properly presents an attitude or performance that is representative or respectful to the university and/or the association. Please, no submissions that include gross profanity or lewd lyrics. Decisions of the panel will be final.
The panel will select up to ten (10) finalists, from whom one will be chosen to perform live at the annual Homecoming Bash. Finalists will be posted on the association website and students/alumni/general public will be able to electronically vote for their favorite. Voting will be open from date of post (no later than Sept. 24, 2012) until noon (12:00 p.m. EDT) Friday, Oct. 5, 2012. The Office of Special Events will tabulate all votes and a winner will be announced via the association website on Monday, Oct. 8, 2012. Vote procedures and regulations will be posted on the association website once the technology that will be used has been selected and programmed. The band receiving the most votes will be deemed winner. In the event of a tie, the original selection panel will decide the winner.
The selected band will be required to submit a complete play list to the association five (5) business days prior to homecoming.
The selected band will perform the entirety of the homecoming bash, three hours prior to kick-off on game day (with adequate breaks). The selected band will be responsible for all necessary musical instrumentation and amplification equipment. The association will provide staging and power and insures a rain location in the event of inclement weather.
If the band has a recorded CD that has been professionally produced and is of a quality that is suitable for sale, the association will review the product and related sales material to determine if it can be sold during the Homecoming Festival. A written request, sent to Virginia Pinto, and product sample will be required five (5) business days prior to homecoming.
The winning band will receive the right to play at the Homecoming Bash, recognition on the association website and five hundred dollars ($500).
