Maryland Alumni Association Scholarship

Aleksandra Derkacheva ’11 graduated from Churchill High School and is admitted to the Robert H. Smith School of Business for fall 2007. She plans to study international business and finance when she continues the Maryland family tradition––her sister Irina Derkacheva is a 1999 graduate. Aleksandra has earned an impressive 4.6 GPA and hopes to continue her extensive community service on campus.

Philip Glaser ’11 is from Olney, MD. At Colonel Zadok Magruder High School, Philip optimized his experience through challenging course work and distinguished co-curricular involvement. His Ultimate Frisbee team went to the state championships and off the course he was often found playing with his band. Philip is truly interested in video game development and plans to study computer engineering. He is admitted to the Honors program and is most excited for the plentiful variety of opportunities and people at University of Maryland. When Philip enrolls in the fall, he will join his brother, Aaron Glaser ’08 and continue on the Terp family tradition of his father, Larry Glaser ’70, ’76.

Diana Zhong ’11 plans to major in biochemistry and pursue a career in medicine. She loves to learn and is excited for new opportunities at University of Maryland. Diana earned her IB Certificate at Richard Montgomery High School and participated actively outside of the classroom. She was the illustrator, writer and online editor for the school newspaper and played volleyball for the Junior Varsity and Varsity teams. Outside of school, Diana volunteered extensively with Helping Hands, a service organization that painted murals at homeless shelters and hospitals and volunteered in the Mother and Baby Department at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital.

Col. J. Logan Schutz Legacy Scholarship

Erin Peisach ’09 is a Dietetics major from Owings Mills, MD. Her campus involvement includes a variety of volunteer activities and most recently, Director of Campus Activities for Alpha Phi sorority. Erin’s father, Jeffrey Peisach, is a 1977 graduate from the Robert H. Smith School of Business. In addition to keeping the Maryland family tradition alive, Erin is delving into leadership opportunities inside and outside of the classroom. Most recently, Erin just completed the St. Anthony’s Triathlon in St. Petersburg, FL with a group of her Alpha Phi sorority sisters. This was Erin’s first triathlon and she raised over $4,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society just to participate. Erin credits her Maryland experience thus far for teaching her that adversity breeds character; she welcomes the challenges ahead!

Mitretek Young Alumni Club Scholarship

Ebony Dashiell majored in psychology and minored in Spanish as an undergraduate. She is currently pursuing her doctorate in Human Development and has earned an impressive 3.945 GPA. Ebony has excelled inside and outside of the classroom since her first year on campus. In addition to extensive research experience throughout her undergraduate and graduate careers, Ebony is a member of several noteworthy honors organizations including Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society and Graduate Student Government. She was also the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences commencement speaker in 2003. Ebony describes herself as a Servant Leader and plans to “dedicate every waking moment of [her] life to being a change for others.”

Patrick Grzanka earned his B.A. in Journalism in 2004. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in American Studies and hopes to complete his doctoral coursework in spring 2009. Patrick’s academic achievement is extraordinary; he earned a cumulative 4.0 GPA as an undergraduate and has maintained his perfect academic record through graduate school thus far. In addition to being recognized with numerous leadership awards including Phi Beta Kappa as an undergraduate, Patrick is now the co-director of the Honors Humanities program. He transitioned from being a Terp undergraduate to a Terp graduate seamlessly. Patrick knows that he will always be involved in some capacity “as alum, advisor, Terp fan, and frequent visitor.”
