Maryland Alumni Association Scholarship
Aleksandra Derkacheva
’11 graduated from Churchill High School and is admitted to
the Robert H. Smith School of Business for fall 2007. She plans
to study international business and finance when she continues the
Maryland family tradition––her sister Irina Derkacheva
is a 1999 graduate. Aleksandra has earned an impressive 4.6 GPA
and hopes to continue her extensive community service on campus.
Philip Glaser ’11 is
from Olney, MD. At Colonel Zadok Magruder High School, Philip optimized
his experience through challenging course work and distinguished
co-curricular involvement. His Ultimate Frisbee team went to the
state championships and off the course he was often found playing
with his band. Philip is truly interested in video game development
and plans to study computer engineering. He is admitted to the Honors
program and is most excited for the plentiful variety of opportunities
and people at University of Maryland. When Philip enrolls in the
fall, he will join his brother, Aaron Glaser ’08 and continue
on the Terp family tradition of his father, Larry Glaser ’70,
’76.
Diana Zhong ’11 plans
to major in biochemistry and pursue a career in medicine. She loves
to learn and is excited for new opportunities at University of Maryland.
Diana earned her IB Certificate at Richard Montgomery High School
and participated actively outside of the classroom. She was the
illustrator, writer and online editor for the school newspaper and
played volleyball for the Junior Varsity and Varsity teams. Outside
of school, Diana volunteered extensively with Helping Hands, a service
organization that painted murals at homeless shelters and hospitals
and volunteered in the Mother and Baby Department at Shady Grove
Adventist Hospital.
Col. J. Logan Schutz Legacy Scholarship
Erin Peisach ’09 is
a Dietetics major from Owings Mills, MD. Her campus involvement
includes a variety of volunteer activities and most recently, Director
of Campus Activities for Alpha Phi sorority. Erin’s father,
Jeffrey Peisach, is a 1977 graduate from the Robert H. Smith School
of Business. In addition to keeping the Maryland family tradition
alive, Erin is delving into leadership opportunities inside and
outside of the classroom. Most recently, Erin just completed the
St. Anthony’s Triathlon in St. Petersburg, FL with a group
of her Alpha Phi sorority sisters. This was Erin’s first triathlon
and she raised over $4,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society
just to participate. Erin credits her Maryland experience thus far
for teaching her that adversity breeds character; she welcomes the
challenges ahead!
Mitretek Young Alumni Club Scholarship
Ebony Dashiell majored
in psychology and minored in Spanish as an undergraduate. She is
currently pursuing her doctorate in Human Development and has earned
an impressive 3.945 GPA. Ebony has excelled inside and outside of
the classroom since her first year on campus. In addition to extensive
research experience throughout her undergraduate and graduate careers,
Ebony is a member of several noteworthy honors organizations including
Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society and Graduate
Student Government. She was also the College of Behavioral and Social
Sciences commencement speaker in 2003. Ebony describes herself as
a Servant Leader and plans to “dedicate every waking moment
of [her] life to being a change for others.”
Patrick Grzanka earned his
B.A. in Journalism in 2004. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in
American Studies and hopes to complete his doctoral coursework in
spring 2009. Patrick’s academic achievement is extraordinary;
he earned a cumulative 4.0 GPA as an undergraduate and has maintained
his perfect academic record through graduate school thus far. In
addition to being recognized with numerous leadership awards including
Phi Beta Kappa as an undergraduate, Patrick is now the co-director
of the Honors Humanities program. He transitioned from being a Terp
undergraduate to a Terp graduate seamlessly. Patrick knows that
he will always be involved in some capacity “as alum, advisor,
Terp fan, and frequent visitor.”
