Hear from an esteemed panel of Terp alumni as they take a deep dive into their journey building careers in a variety of arenas, and respond to the hot-button issues shaping the current industry landscape.

leigh wilson-smileyLeigh Wilson-Smiley
Director, School of Theatre, Dance and Performance Studies
Leigh Wilson Smiley has been the Director of the School of Theatre, Dance and Performance Studies (TDPS) since 2013. TDPS is the feeder institution for designers, directors, performers, dramaturgs and scholars for the tri-state area. Smiley is the Producing Director for nine Main Stage dance and theater shows and five Second Season shows. Prior to assuming leadership of TDPS, Smiley served as a professor in the School and fulfilled a variety of administrative roles including Head of the first MFA in Performance cohort at TDPS, and Associate Director of Theatre for the School. She has been nominated two times as a Philip Merrill Presidential Scholar Faculty Mentor.

Smiley has received two Creative and Performing Arts Awards for her research on the extended voice and the Visual Accent Dialect Archive. She received a Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities Fellowship, and the Foxworth Creative Enterprise Initiative Fellowship. Smiley works as a Dialect and Voice Director for institutions such as Ford’s Theatre, Center Stage in Baltimore, Round House Theatre and continues to develop and present the Visual Accent and Dialect Archive. She is a member of Actors Equity Association, Screen Actors Guild, American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, Association for Theatre in Higher Education, and the Voice and Speech Trainers Association.

Lindsey KasabianLindsey Kasabian

Born and raised near Boston, Lindsey graduated from University of Maryland, College Park with a B.A. in Theatre Studies. She began her career in New York at William Morris Agency as an Assistant in the Special Services department. She relocated to Los Angeles in 2005 to accept a position at the company’s Beverly Hills office in the Television Business Affairs department. The following year she transitioned into a different facet of the entertainment industry – Talent – when employed by 20th Century Fox Television’s Casting Department. Under the expert tutelage of Sharon Klein, EVP Talent & Casting, she developed a passion and aptitude for seeking gifted artists for the studio’s many projects.

In 2010, newly promoted to an Executive, Lindsey solely covered “Homeland” – a Fox21 pilot for Showtime. Under her supervision the project landed stars Claire Danes, Damian Lewis and Mandy Patinkin while elevating the careers of several actors throughout the series including Rupert Friend and Nazanin Boniadi. The show, along with its creators and cast, has gone on to win various awards in recognition by such organizations as the Primetime Emmys, Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild and Casting Society of America.

Lindsey oversees a roster of writers, producers and directors for the studio and has cultivated and placed many notable talent names into the studio’s shows. Lindsey is currently working on THE CHI (Showtime), GENIUS (NatGeo), HOMELAND (Showtime), LESS THAN ZERO (Hulu), POSE (FX), QUEEN OF THE SOUTH (USA) and SEVEN SECONDS (Netflix).

B.J. Levin
SVP, Development
Wilshire Studios, NBC Universal
B.J. Levin is Senior Vice President, Development, Wilshire Studios where he oversees the development and sales of original, non-scripted programming. He reports to Dawn Olmstead, Co-President, Universal Cable Productions and Wilshire Studios.

Most recently, Levin oversaw the production of Oxygen’s “Mysteries and Scandals” hosted by Emmy® and Peabody Award winner Soledad O’Brien.  Up next he and his team produced “Unspeakable Crime: The Killing of Jessica Chambers” also for Oxygen and this fall he will oversee the debut “People’s Choice Awards” on E!. Levin currently has over 80 projects in active development for the studio.

Levin is a two-time Emmy Award-winning executive producer and showrunner who has worked in the television and film industry for more than a decade. Prior to Wilshire Studios, he served as executive producer and showrunner for VICE, one of HBO’s most successful documentary series which garnered eight Emmy nominations during its first four seasons, winning in 2014 for best Outstanding Informational Series or Special. Previously, Levin served as director, producer, showrunner and executive producer for several networks including A&E, BBC, Bravo, Discovery, Food Network, HBO, National Geographic, TLC, and VICE TV. At MTV, he was producer on the Emmy-award winning series, MADE.

Levin has a B.S. from the R.H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland.

Greenberg Traurig, LLP

Katherine M. Imp is a transactional entertainment attorney in the Los Angeles office of Greenberg Traurig, LLP, representing financiers, production companies, studios, networks and independent producers and distributors in the financing, development, production and distribution of motion picture, television and new media content.

Kate also has extensive experience as production counsel for motion pictures and television, having drafted and negotiated production and post-production agreements for over 150 different productions, including performer, director, writer, producer and other above- and below-the-line agreements, as well as agreements with domestic and foreign distributors and sales agents, ranging from small independent companies to major and mini-major studios. Kate also has experience representing advertising agencies, brands, social media and app companies, and talent in the licensing, clearance, ownership and protection of intellectual property.

Kate’s interest in entertainment law stems from her experience making a documentary feature (Beauty Beneath the Dirt) of her 2000-mile Appalachian Trail hike from Georgia to Maine in 2010 – a film for which she launched a 45-venue national film tour, obtained digital and foreign distribution, and through which she learned first-hand the challenges of financing, producing and distributing audiovisual content.

Adam is a co-founder of IAMA Theatre Company in Los Angeles, and was most recently nominated for Ovation Awards for IAMA’s LA premiere of The Recommendation by Jon Caren (Winner Best Production 2014) and for Best Lead Actor in a Musical for Hey, Morgan! a world premiere comedy by Matthew Fogel and Isaac Laskin, Directed by Matt Shakman at the Black Dahlia Theatre. More stage credits include: Rent, You are Here, The Accidental Blonde, the world premieres of Leslye Headland’s Bachelorette and Assistance (IAMA Theatre Company), and “David” in Paul Grellong’s west coast premiere of Manuscript (The Elephant).

Adam is currently filming the upcoming season of Showtime’s The Affair, the HBO film My Dinner with Hervé, and indie comedy Ode To Joy, and recently filmed the lead role in a new TBS half-hour comedy pilot and roles in the upcoming indie films L.A. Times (Sundance 2017), Feed, The Female Brain, and Social Animals. He’s been seen as Avie Tevanian in Aaron Sorkin’s Steve Jobs, arcs the Netflix series from the Wachowskis: Sense8, ABC’s Cristela, Audience Network’s Kingdom, and the NBC comedy Trial & Error, as well as guest starring roles on Grace & Frankie (Netflix), Snowfall (FX) and The Mindy Project (FOX). Recent television credits include: Bones, CSI: Cyber, The Mysteries of Laura, Betrayal, 1600 Penn, Scandal, Mistresses, and Grey’s Anatomy.
