For many students, a small scholarship can be just the boost they need to achieve their college and career dreams. The University of Maryland Alumni Association is here to help by awarding 16 scholarships annually. Ten undergraduate students are selected to receive $2,000 each, and five graduate students are selected to receive $3,000 each. The Col. J. Logan Schutz Scholarship awards $750 to one legacy student of junior standing.
Join our efforts to make a difference in the life of a student by supporting the University of Maryland Alumni Association Scholarship Fund.
Students who wish to apply for these scholarships should meet the following criteria:
- Be currently enrolled at the University of Maryland, College Park. Prospective, admitted and transfer students who have not yet matriculated are ineligible until they have enrolled and completed one semester at UMD. (Links to assist non-enrolled students are located at the bottom of this page.)
- Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, verified by the submission of an unofficial UMD transcript.
- Secure one letter of recommendation from a professor, mentor or trusted colleague. The recommender does not have to be UMD-affiliated. There is an option in the application process for applicants who prefer to submit a confidential letter of recommendation.
- Demonstrate a fearless Terrapin spirit through their application materials, including a current resume and two short-answer essays. Academic excellence, extracurricular activities, service projects, study abroad experiences, volunteer work, paid and unpaid internships or employment are all great experiences to highlight within your application materials.
All current UMD students who meet the above criteria are encouraged to apply. Legacy status is required only for those applying for the Col. J. Logan Schutz Legacy Scholarship.
Col. J. Logan Schutz Legacy Scholarship
This scholarship is made possible thanks to a generous gift from Col. J. Logan Schutz '38, M.S. '40, past executive director and director emeritus of the University of Maryland Alumni Association. It is presented annually to a student with at least 56 credit hours attending the University of Maryland, College Park, who is also a legacy student (one parent or family member is a graduate of College Park).
Application available January 2017 for the 2017-2018 academic year
University of Maryland Alumni Association Scholarship
Fifteen scholarships are made possible, thanks to the generosity of dues-paying Alumni Association members. A portion of each alumni association membership directly supports the association's student scholarship fund. These awards are presented annually to undergraduate and graduate students who exhibit a fearless Terrapin spirit through their academic and extracurricular accomplishments. Legacy (having one parent or family member who is a graduate of College Park) is not required to apply. Legacy is just one of the factors we consider when selecting recipients, and many past recipients have not been legacy students.
