First Day Reflections and Excitement in Joining the Maryland Family

While today marks my first official day as Vice President for University Relations and as President of the University of Maryland College Park Foundation, I have felt welcomed by the Terp community since the announcement of my appointment on May 4. My wife, Erin, and I have been humbled by the warmth and kindness we have received—particularly in our interactions with students, volunteers, alumni and donors in recent weeks. We couldn’t be happier to join the Maryland community, especially at this pivotal time in the university’s growth as a preeminent flagship institution.

In walking around and getting to know the campus, I have discovered that it exudes the energy of a dynamic institution with both rich traditions and a bright future. I have seen it reflected in impressive spaces that spark new approaches for teaching and learning, innovation and entrepreneurship. I have heard it when speaking with our provost, deans and faculty about their aspirations for expanding highly successful programs or starting new initiatives to meet the demands of our global community. I have felt it most strongly during my interactions with Maryland students whose genuine curiosity and drive to succeed can be our greatest inspiration.

The power of this energy and momentum reaches beyond the boundaries of our physical campus. The university’s strategic plan, Fearlessly Forward, emphasizes our mission of service and our responsibility to enhance communities near and far. I look forward to leading the Division of University Relations as an integral partner in delivering this bold vision. Our success in this endeavor will rely upon support from our generous and passionate alumni and friends who share our commitment to excellence and impact for the public good.

In the months ahead and beyond, I look forward to opportunities to meet many Terps like you who are part of the fabric of our vibrant community and to thank you for your generosity and commitment to Maryland. As we take lessons from the remarkable and foundational success of the recently concluded $1.5B Fearless Ideas campaign, your input will be invaluable to me. I look forward to learning more about what makes the University of Maryland so special and your collective hopes for the institution’s future. Now, we get to work!

Warm regards,

Matthew M. Hodge, Ph.D.
