Read more about SALC’s initiatives to promote Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, starting with our very own DEI Committee.
We are proud to introduce the new Student Alumni Leadership Council (SALC) Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) committee. This committee is composed of SALC members across graduation years and different committees within our organization. This group is responsible for developing opportunities to educate members of SALC on diversity, equity and inclusion as well as creating partnerships with student organizations and campus departments to encourage program collaboration.
Check out some of our ongoing initiatives:
-
Society Seminars: A series of 30-minute, once a month, guided discussions focused on issues and struggles facing marginalized communities in the United States, with an additional focus on issues in and around the UMD and College Park periphery. Our first seminar focused on recent events and violence toward the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Community.
-
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Training Workshop: SALC members undergo hands-on training each semester focusing on approaching DEI issues on campus and allowing for a safe discussion space to reflect.
-
DEI Tips of the Week: Weekly suggestions and advice sent to help educate SALC members in better developing habits rooted in inclusivity and diversity awareness.
-
Member New Member Program (MnM) DEI-Focused Weekly Challenge: As one of the MnM weekly challenges, our mentees and mentors have an open conversation about their backgrounds and identities.
SALC’s first DEI committee was composed of (left to right) Tiffany Zheng ‘22, Kyle Dineen ‘21, Lade Gbolade ‘21 and Amir Kalantary ‘22.
