Do Good Month Volunteer Spotlight - Austin Walker ’11
Do Good month, April 1-30, is an opportunity for the University of Maryland to highlight the good our alums are doing throughout their communities.
We are honored to call them our alums, and we hope you feel inspired to give back either on campus or in your own community. Today we highlight Austin Walker '11. Read below to learn more about Austin and his journey!
What does "do good" mean to you?
"Do good" means doing something because it's truly aligned with a cause that you believe will make the world a better place. “Do good” is an expression of service.
What inspired you to begin volunteering?
I'm passionate about harnessing the power of community. Engaging our Terp alum community felt like a great way to get into the action–it's created dozens of opportunities to further serve and cultivate meaningful relationships.
What is the name of the organization you choose to volunteer your time?
I choose to volunteer my time with Accomplishment Coaching.
What do you do in your volunteer role to make an impact?
I coached college students in low-income areas to support their personal development journeys. Last summer I was in Detroit with a group of high school students with college aspirations–the coaching was focused on effective communication skills.
What makes you continue to come back and volunteer?
It's a really rewarding feeling for me to give back.
Were you a part of any student groups while you were at UMD? If so, share about ways the group helped to support the community.
I worked with the University of Maryland football team!
What message would you give students today to encourage them to seek opportunities to make a positive impact in their communities?
The more you serve, the more you'll be rewarded by the universe. It also feels personally rewarding to give back.
