Legacy Award: Greg Schaub ’82

Nearly 200 students from Texas enrolled at UMD in 2019 – double the number in 2000. That jump is due, in part, to Greg Schaub, a winner of the Legacy Award.
 

For more than a decade, the Dallas resident and longtime Alumni Association volunteer has spread Terp pride across the Lone Star State.
 

It all started during an away football game, when Schaub ran into fellow Terps and then joined them after the game for dinner.
 

“From there, there was a follow-up meeting in Dallas, and they asked me two very good questions, 'How would you like to engage with the school?’ and ‘What things are important to you?,” he said. “It was framed really well because at that moment, living in Dallas, I felt like there was a lot of really smart kids in the community and a lot of really great high schools, but none of them had any awareness, let alone an exposure, to the University of Maryland.”  
 

Schaub began working with the Alumni Association and the admissions office, attending college nights at area schools and hosting mixers whenever UMD faculty and staff were in town. Schaub, who retired in 2018 after 20 years with JP Morgan Chase, also coordinated networking events for UMD alumni in Texas. In recent years, he served as chair of the      Alumni Association Board of Governors’ finance committee.
 

Schaub is also an active philanthropist. He is on the board of his Sigma Chi fraternity’s charitable foundation, the Gamma Chi Chapter Foundation. The foundation recently approved a $150,000 donation to UMD to endow a program on social justice. And a decade ago, Schaub and his wife, Patti (Kin) ’82, started the “Texas Terp Scholarship” for a Texas high school graduate attending the university. That scholarship has built a pipeline of incoming Terps, said Sammy Popat ‘02, M.S. ’15, Campus Connector and Discovery District manager. 
 

“I have had the pleasure of knowing Greg and his wife, Patti, for more than a decade,” Popat said. Their philanthropic support for UMD does not stop with the scholarship, as they also named the floor in the Maryland Club within the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center. Greg, in particular, continues to invest his time, energy, resources and love for Maryland by volunteering and supporting the university through his service to the Alumni Association and Sigma Chi.”
 

To Schaub, it’s all part of being a proud Terp. He recalled President John F. Kennedy’s famous saying, “Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country.” 
 

“I think about that in the context of Maryland, and I wish more alumni would ask that question,” he said. “Say, ‘How can I get involved and help?,’ because there are definitely areas where no matter what your background, temperament or interests are, you can help.”

 

The Legacy Award honors an alumnus/a who has made a significant impact to their community over their lifetime. Up to three Legacy Awards are granted annually, celebrating the personal and professional lifetime achievement of Terps.
