Nova Terps Board Member Spotlight - Blake Scherr '06

Blake Scherr '06

By Mateo Aycardi

To better connect you with UMD Alumni in Nova, we are shining the spotlight on our Board members! First up is Blake Scherr '06, NOVA Terps Board President.

Blake Scherr graduated in 2006 from UMD, where he “made a lifetime of memories and relationships in four short years.” He first got involved with the Alumni Association as a Member-at-Large to give back to the university and to meet people (personal and professional).

Blake believes that Terp pride is alive and well in Northern Virginia. “It’s hard to go very far without seeing a Maryland flag or Terp gear.” He took over as Board President in 2023 and recruited the VP and Treasurer at two NOVA alumni events a few years back.

While it’s a common misconception that serving on the Board is a major time commitment, Blake encourages Board members to put in as much time as they are willing. Members are encouraged to attend monthly meetings and participate in the planning of one event per year, but many participate in several because they are a blast!

Here are some fun facts to know about Blake:

UMD Dorm: Easton.

Bucket List item: Northern Lights.

Favorite Book: Freakonomics by Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner.

Top TV Show: The Sopranos – he watched the entire series while at UMD!

Favorite Food: Ice cream from the UMD Dairy!

Best Restaurant: Lyon Hall (Arlington).

Hobby of Choice: Cooking. He loves making meals at home for his wife.

The Nova Terps alumni community is excited to welcome Blake’s first baby (a boy!), due in late May. With a mother who graduated from Rutgers and a father who graduated from Maryland, Baby Scherr will come to understand Big10 competition first-hand!
