Keeping up with your Connections, with Patrick Edwards ‘20

This class of 2020 graduate was a founding member of a program aimed to connect current students with alumni. Now, his role is reversed after graduating from the University of Maryland. 

Why UMD?

Patrick Edwards ‘20 knew that the University of Maryland was the best education he could receive for the best price. This Rockville, Md. native’s sister attended UMD, so he and his family were already comfortable with the fit. Reflecting on his four years at school, Edwards says the education he gained versus the price it cost was great. 

What clubs and organizations were you involved in at UMD?

Edwards was most notably a founding member of the Student Alumni Leadership Council (SALC) his first year. Here, he bridged the gap between alumni and current/prospective students. The mission of SALC is to give students more of an understanding of what it means to be a Maryland alum. Edwards was exposed to people who held high positions at the university, so he learned the logic behind many important decisions that the university made.

Additionally, he paid homage to his religion by working at the Catholic Student Center, where he led retreats and bible study.

Have you picked up any new hobbies or interests since graduation?

Edwards now uses his free time to learn guitar. He describes it as a slow learning curve, but he’s working hard. When he’s not practicing his guitar skills, Edwards is grinding on his FIFA video game. 

Where do you currently work, and what’s your job title?

Edwards currently works for EA Engineering, Science and Technology, in the president’s selection program. He is part of a marketing team tasked with finding potential desirable contracts in federal proposals. He enjoys this experience because it gives him a unique look at how government contracts are selected. He is scheduled to move to the water and natural resources team soon, where his background in environmental science will help.

Before this job, Edwards went through the interview process at EA, but COVID interrupted his efforts. He kept in close contact with his connections at EA after the pandemic, and finally got a job offer. 

What’s your advice for current and recently graduated terps?

Edwards tells current students to, “Get involved in things that you’re passionate about. Don’t overwork yourself, but find the things that stimulate you mentally.” To those who recently graduated, he recommends, “Keep up with your connections you made in college because you never know when a job may show up.”
