Hear from five alums featured on the Terp Business Directory who are sharing their path to business ownership:

Joseph Black '06, founder of Joe Black Marketing Solutions (J.B.M.S.), has built a brand that thrives both domestically and internationally. J.B.M.S. is based out of Dresden, Germany, and provides online services accessible to all types of businesses, no matter where they are.

Black accredits much of his entrepreneurial knowledge to his Bachelor’s degree in Business Management from the Robert H. Smith School of Business. Using the skills he gained during his time at UMD, Black helps clients achieve their career goals through a variety of online marketing services and personal expertise.

Black offered advice for aspiring enTERPreneurs to carry on their business journeys. “Never give up on your dreams, no matter what anyone says!”

Daniel Crosby '96 has built a brand based on collaboration, trust, and care. Crosby has invested in technology and developed operating procedures to help his business run smoothly and effectively. Scope Property Management focuses on creating quality and reliable housing solutions.

Crosby commends UMD’s network of resources for being instrumental to his company’s growth. Scope Property Management utilizes these resources to guarantee safe and affordable housing for all.

Crosby’s advice to business owners: “Don’t give up!”

Jason Hishmeh '95 has spent the past 12 years investing and guiding small business owners towards their goals. Get Startup Funding supports startups in the AI and technology industries, providing them with the tools needed to expand their business beyond their wildest dreams.

Hishmeh reaches out to UMD alumni not only to network but also to get advice for his own business.

Hishmeh presents valuable advice for those looking to start their own businesses: “The ability to persist and not give up is one of the most important traits. Most people give up when things don't go their way, but the ability to persist for years and years until you achieve success is very important.” 

Anthony Ajayi’s '10 PixlDash is well-known in the DMV area, providing more than just high-quality photos to clients. Guests can customize their experience to elevate their events and create unforgettable memories. Ajayi applauds UMD for its support of his business, providing access to entrepreneurial resources and a strong network to help build his brand.

Ajayi’s advice to fellow Terps hoping to launch their own business: “As a new venture, prioritize building authentic relationships. Network not just to gain, but to give-look for synergies where you can collaborate, add value, and grow together. The most sustainable success is rooted in mutual support.”
