In 2021, the Student Alumni Leadership Council (SALC) initiated a diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) committee to develop opportunities and events to educate SALC members, campus partners and student organizations on the importance of an inclusive campus community. SALC’s committee is still going strong in 2022, with brand-new members and programs.
Current members include Alyssa Cobb ’23 (also serving as chair of the committee), Gwen Pobee ’25, Athena Sackleth ’22, Edward Awe ’25 and Lauren Spencer ’25. This joint committee is composed of members from all of SALC’s other committees to ensure the implementation of diversity, equity and inclusion work throughout everything that SALC does.

DEI Convo Intros: A weekly summary of a new diversity, equity and inclusion-related subjects highlighted through conversations during general body meetings. Members are then given related media throughout the week such as music, articles, movies and podcasts to learn more about diverse perspectives.

DEI Calendar of Events: Members have access to a compilation of events hosted by other organizations around campus related to identity with an emphasis on events targeted toward listening and learning.

SALC Relationships: The committee is looking to partner with other DEI-centered personnel in the UMD community, including school departments, student government associations and alum affinity groups to support their initiatives and strengthen cultural awareness within SALC and beyond.

Workshops: SALC members undergo hands-on training each semester focusing on approaching DEI issues on campus and allowing for a safe space to discuss and reflect.

Member New Member Program (MnM) DEI-Focused Weekly Challenge: As one of the MnM weekly challenges, our mentees and mentors have open conversations about their backgrounds and identities.
