One day in the early 1950s, Chuck Day ’53 tagged along with a friend of his on an unusual outing: as part of an assignment for an applied psychology class at the University of Maryland, Day’s friend and several of her classmates were heading to St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington, D.C., a psychiatric facility.
