Levin is a professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at Princeton University, where he is director of the Center for BioComplexity in the High Meadows Environmental Institute. The center considers coupled human and environmental systems—from ecosystems to the biosphere —and how they support life on Earth.

How to be Fearless: Learning from our Terps Under 30

On the evening of April 3, the University of Maryland Alumni Association and Student Alumni Leadership Council hosted their annual ‘Terps Under 30’ event, which featured four alumni under the age of 30. The event began with a networking hour and reception, and then transitioned into a TED talk-style program, where our four speakers, Alexandra Givan ’16, Thomas Hong ’2020, Rachel Lipman ’15 and Derek Xiao ’19 spoke about their life experiences and how they find themselves moving fearlessly forward.

In the nascent days of the COVID-19 global pandemic, doctors and medical researchers were scrambling to understand what treatments could help stop the effects of the deadly virus. Dr. Merdad Parsey was six weeks into his position as Chief Medical Officer at the global pharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences when they began hearing about coronavirus cases in China.

Research Award: Dr. Kathleen Maletic Neuzil ’83

Dr. Kathleen Neuzil ’83

The Myron M. Levine, MD, DTPH, Professor in Vaccinology, director of the Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health and chief of the division of geographic medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Neuzil, who is among the world’s leading research scientists in vaccine development and policy, was instrumental in developing and testing COVID-19 vaccines during the pandemic.
