Hugh Newell Jacobsen ‘51, '93 (Honorary Doctorate) was an award-winning architect who designed our very own Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center. He died March 4, 2021 at an assisted-living center in Front Royal, Va. at the age of 91, but his legacy lives on in the Maryland community. 

When Brian Ullmann ’92 set out to reach the highest point of every state in 2017, he brought along a pocket-sized companion: a stuffed Testudo that clipped conveniently onto his climbing pack.

This 2020 alumna used her time at UMD to branch out. As an engineering student and gymnast, she made meaningful relationships with people of many different backgrounds during her four years in College Park. 

The Alumni Association’s marquee event, A Celebration of Terps: Featuring the Maryland Awards, was reimagined this year as a virtual gala on Friday, April 23, 2021. The celebration capped off a week of events for the inauguration of Darryll J. Pines, the 34th president of the university.

On the same day Americans elected their first female vice president, Alethia Nancoo ’90, M.E. ’92, shattered a glass ceiling of her own. Nancoo became the first African-American woman to serve on the global board of Squire Patton Boggs, the nation’s 17th largest law firm.
