Friday Five: Giving Day Is March 9

Welcome to the Friday Five, a roundup of the best your Alumni Association and other UMD communities have to offer. From the latest events to fun facts, here are essentials in five categories for you to check out this weekend.

1. What's Happening
Bronze Testudo — Maryland Giving Day; 03.09.22

- #GivingDayUMD is March 9, 2022

This Giving Day, please consider making your gift in support of the Alumni Association Student Engagement Fund, and help fuel the next generation of fearless Terp leaders. When you give, you can double your impact, thanks to our Board of Governors, who are matching all gifts, dollar for dollar, up to $14,250.

2. Quotables

Marguerita “Rita” Cheng ‘91, ‘93

- Meet the Board of Governors: Marguerita “Rita” Cheng ‘91, ‘93

"The first time Marguerita “Rita” Cheng ‘91, ‘93 set foot on the University of Maryland campus was for freshman orientation. 'Can you imagine applying to a school and never going there except for orientation?' asked Cheng, who moved to the state at age 16. 'I didn't know anybody, but I knew that Maryland was big and it could be overwhelming.'”

3. A Little Fun

La Plata Beach
- La Plata Beach's Cool Transformation

"We likely left our wintriest weather behind when the calendar flipped to March yesterday, but that didn’t stop Terps from savoring one final frosty fling. La Plata Beach became a temporary tundra last night as the Student Government Association partnered with University Recreation and Wellness to bring an ice rink to campus, complete with cozy cocoa, coffee and cookies. Hundreds of students skated and snacked at the Winter Wonderland event, made possible through $8,000 in surplus funds that the SGA allocated late last semester."

4. In Your Terp Community

UMD President Darryll J. Pines (right) and Bowie State University President Aminta Breaux (left) stand with Richard and Dawn Collins, parents of 1st Lt. Richard Collins III on Wednesday at the site of a planned plaza commemorating the Bowie State student. It will include two walls—one featuring an engraved granite plaque honoring him—and a fountain at the base. The second wall will display the Unity Mural created collaboratively by UMD and Bowie State students, faculty and staff as part of The Clarice's 2017 NextNOW Fest to illustrate peace, justice and unity.

- UMD Breaks Ground on Plaza Honoring Lt. Richard Collins III

"The University of Maryland unveiled plans and broke ground today on a plaza that will honor the life and legacy of Bowie State University student 1st Lt. Richard W. Collins III. The ceremony was held in honor of Collins, a Black man murdered by a white UMD student in a tragedy that sparked years of dialogue over racial strife and a renewed commitment to justice across the UMD community."
