Monday Roundup: Honoring Juneteenth

Monday Roundup: Honoring Juneteenth

It's Monday, Terps.

You know what that means — no, don't quit your job just so you can go back to sleep. Your Alumni Association's got brand-new content to help you advance your career, connect with fellow alums and have a little bit of Maryland fun.

Get your week off to the best start by checking out the opportunities below, brought to you by us and other campus communities.

Curlee Holton’s “Bred for Pleasure” is one of the pieces housed in UMD’s David C. Driskell Center for the Study of Visual Arts and Culture of African Americans and the African Diaspora that underscore the meaning of Juneteenth.

Spotlight On: Juneteenth

"The yearly community celebrations around Juneteenth, which commemorates the June 19, 1865 liberation of the last enslaved Texans, lay out a vibrant feast for the senses ... But visual art also plays an important part in the collective memory that surrounds the holiday."

Terp Trivia: President Pines made Juneteenth an official University of Maryland holiday before President Biden announced it as a federal holiday in 2020.

02. QUOTABLES

Game, Set, Match

Michael Shindledecker ’16 and Colin Morrow ’16

"Love, in many cases, can be a roll of the dice. Just ask Michael Shindledecker ’16 and Colin Morrow ’16. 'We love Dungeons & Dragons, Warhammer, and really any type of board game with friends,' Michael says. 'We’re very big nerds.'

The couple, who married in 2018 and live in Herndon, Va., had their own circuitous board game-like journey to exchanging nuptials. They both grew up in Harford County, Md., and they were in the same Boy Scout troop as kids. But the boys went to different high schools, didn’t run in the same social circles and rarely interacted."
